This is a very common disease seen in India and other developing countries. It primarily affects the lung through the bones, lymph nodes, intestine. Brain and other organs may also be affected.

This disease is caused by bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The infection is spread by patients of tuberculosis who discharge these bacteria in their sputum or nasal secretions during bouts of coughing or sneezing. Malnutrition can reduce the immunity of the individual and predispose him to this infection. People living in crowded areas with inadequate ventilation and sunshine are at high risk.
