Opacification of the lens of the eye or its capsule (covering) sufficient to interfere with vision is called cataract.

Cataract may be caused due to following factors:

  • Malnutrition
  • Vitamin A or B deficiency.
  • High myopia (short-sight)
  • Diabetes
  • Old age
  • Infections of the eye

Signs & Symptoms

Initially patient complains of blurring of vision in the early stages of the disease. Later when the cataract matures, complete vision is impaired in the affected eye. If treatment is not done, the cataract becomes hypermature and leads to increase in intraocular pressure (glaucoma).
