Mouth Ulcers (Stomatitis)

Stomatitis refers to the inflammation of the mouth resulting in diffuse redness, blisters, ulcers and sulmucosal haemorrhages. The inner sides of the cheeks, tongue, floor of the tongue and palate may be affected.

Causes

Ulcers may be caused by different types of organisms bacteria (syphilis) fungi (candidiasis) or viri (herpes simples). They may be due to toxicity of drugs and heavy metals. Nutritional dificiency (B Complex) may also be responsible. It may also be a sign of underlying diseases of the gastrointestinal system, skin, AIDS or even cancer.

Signs & Symptoms

These vary according to the cause. Pain and difficulty in swallowing is present in all cases. Some may complain of fever and foul-smelling odour from the mouth.

Herbal Medicines

  1. Constipation is the root cause. It should be avoided by taking Triphala Churna 1 teaspoonful at bed time.
  2. Gargles can be done with its decoction mixed with honey.
  3. Neem is also very useful in toothpaste form or in tooth powder form.

Ayurvedic Remedies

  1. Khadiradivati is the drug of choice, 1-2 pills chewed or taken with water three times a day.
  2. lrimedadi Taila is also very effective for external use.
Do's & Don'ts
  1. One should avoid tobacco in any form.
  2. Use toothpaste or toothpowder regularly twice daily.
  3. Use of green vegetables and fruits should be encouraged.
