Hysteria

Hysteria is usually caused by a reaction to an emotional upset or nervous stress and is likely to be aggravated by onlookers.

Causes

It is the consequential effect of suppressed conflicts within the person. It is more common in young women in the age group of 15-30 years.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Temporary loss of behavioural control is seen in the individual with dramatic shouting, screaming, crying and wild beating of limbs. The affected may roll on the ground and tear hair and clothes.
  • Hysterical over-breathing (hyperventilation) may follow.

Herbal Medicines

  1. Isolate the affected person from any onlookers and gently but firmly help to calm him/her enough to regain control.
  2. Reassure the patient, but refrain from showing any sympathy and, gently but firmly, escort  him/her to a quiet place. Do not physically restrain or slap the person,  this may make the patient turn more aggressive/violent.
  3. Stay with patient and keep under observation until full recovery takes place.
  4. Arrange for medical aid.

Asafoetida: Popularly known as hing, for medical use, asafoetida should be roasted with a little pure ghee on a hot pan. This process removes impurities. Regular use of asafoetida strengthens the nervous system. 1gm of purified hing should be given with luke warm water to hysteria affected persons for 40 days.

Pure Ghee: It is of great value in the treatment of hysteria. It can be given with rice or chapatis. 5gms of pure cow ghee well mixed in a glass of warm milk can be given, preferably at bed-time.

Almonds: Almonds are very useful for hysterical patients. Two almonds soaked in water overnight, should be made into a paste, with a little sugar and taken regularly once a day to improve the mental make-up of the affected person.

Ayurvedic Remedies

  1. Brahmivati available in tablet form, should be taken in the dose of 1 tablet twice a day with water.
  2. Ashwagandha Churna is another simple herbal remedy. 5gms of powder well mixed in 10gms of pure ghee should be taken along with a cup of warm milk at bedtime.
  3. Mentat tablet (Himalaya Drugs) 1 tablet twice daily with water given for 2 to 3 months strengthens the nervous system.
  4. Brento tablet (Ban) is also very useful in the dosage as above.
