Acidity

Hyperacidity is a widespread common disorder which, if not treated in time, leads to ulcer formation in the digestive tract. It is mainly caused when hydrochloric acid, an important component of the digestive juices, is produced in excess.

Causes

  • Excessive hot, spicy, fried food.
  • Intake of fats, sweets, adulterated and fermented food.
  • Alcohol consumption.
  • Excessive intake of strong chocolate, tea, coffee, garlic, onions and excessive smoking.
  • Stress-related conditions like anger, fear, worrying.
  • Excessive exposure to sun and heat.
  • Aspirin and antHnflammatory drugs.

Signs and Symptoms

  • Burning sensation in the chest and throat.
  • Sour oral secretion/belching.
  • Vomiting, headache.
  • Heat in the body.
  • Lack of appetite.

Herbal Medicines

  1. A decoction of sandal (chandan) may be consumed thrice a day for relief.
  2. Tender fruit pulp of coconut may be taken from time to time. Tender coconut water soothes gastric irritation.
  3. Simple sugar-added cold water also if consumed brings down the acidity level immediately. However, diabetics should refrain from this remedy.
  4. About 200 to 500 ml of cold milk taken in sips during the day and at bedtime proves very beneficial in controlling acidity.

Ayurvedic Remedies

  1. Avipattikara Churnam is a good Ayurvedic remedy. 3 gm of powder well dissolved in 50ml of hot water, should be taken twice a day for 40 days.
  2. Sooktyn tablets in doses of 1 tablet thrice a day with lukewarm water is another effective remedy.
  3. Sutshekar Ras (simple) 1 tablet thrice daily taken with water after meals controls acidity effectively.
  4. Kamdudha Ras (with pearls) is a drug of choice for acidity taken in the dose of 1 tablet thrice daily.
